Etymology
From Sanskrit परिवार (parivāra), meaning "surroundings" or "retinue," derived from the prefix परि (pari, "around") + the root वृ (vṛ, "to cover, enclose"). Over time it narrowed in meaning from a household's full entourage to the nuclear and extended family unit as we understand it today.
Cultural note
In Indian culture, परिवार often extends well beyond the nuclear unit — grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins frequently live together in what is called a संयुक्त परिवार (saṃyukt parivār, "joint family"). This joint-family system is deeply valued in Hindi-speaking society and shapes everything from housing to major life decisions. The word itself carries warm, collective connotations that the English word "family" doesn't always convey.
