पूछना

pūchnā

/puːtʃʰ.nɑː/

Definition

To ask a question or request information from someone.

Example

उसने शिक्षक से रास्ता पूछा।

Show translation

He asked the teacher for directions.

Etymology

From Sanskrit **प्रच्छ** (praccha, "to ask, to inquire"), via Prakrit *puccha*. The root is cognate with Latin *poscere* ("to demand") and Proto-Indo-European *prek̑- ("to ask"). The Hindi infinitive suffix **-ना** (-nā) attaches to the stem **पूछ** (pūch).

Cultural note

In Hindi-speaking culture, the phrasing of a question carries social weight. Asking elders or strangers directly can sometimes feel abrupt; it is common to soften a question with **ज़रा** (zarā, "just a moment / a little") — e.g., *ज़रा पूछना था…* ("I just wanted to ask…"). Note that **पूछना** is not a false friend with Urdu **پوچھنا** (pūchnā) — they are the same word, shared across both languages.
