She always tried to speak the truth.
Etymology
From Sanskrit सत्य (satya, "truth, reality"), via Prakrit and Apabhraṃśa forms that reduced the final syllable. The root sat- (सत्) means "being, existing, real" — the same root found in the philosophical concept of Sat-Chit-Ananda (existence-consciousness-bliss) and in Mahatma Gandhi's concept of Satyagraha ("holding firm to truth").
Cultural note
सच carries deep moral weight in Indian culture. Gandhi's entire independence philosophy, Satyagraha (सत्याग्रह), is literally built on this root. A common Hindi proverb — "सच्चाई की हमेशा जीत होती है" (Truth always wins) — echoes the national motto of India, Satyameva Jayate (सत्यमेव जयते), meaning "Truth alone triumphs." False friends alert: सच (truth/true) is distinct from शक (doubt/suspicion) — don't confuse them.
