Hindi Level 2 verb

सीखना

sīkhnā

/siːkʰnɑː/

Definition

To learn something new, such as a skill, language, or piece of knowledge.

Example

वह हर रोज़ कुछ नया सीखना चाहती है।

Show translation

She wants to learn something new every day.

Etymology

From Sanskrit *śikṣ-* (शिक्ष्), meaning "to learn, to be trained," via the root *śak-* ("to be able"). The Sanskrit verb *śikṣati* passed into Prakrit and then evolved into the Hindi infinitive *sīkhnā*, keeping its core sense of acquiring knowledge or skill through practice.

Cultural note

Learning (*sīkhnā*) holds deep cultural value in the Indian subcontinent — the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition, rooted in Vedic times, frames learning as a lifelong, even sacred, pursuit. You'll hear *kuch naya seekho* ("learn something new") as everyday encouragement across generations. Note: do not confuse *sīkhnā* (to learn) with *sikhānā* (सिखाना, to teach) — they look similar but have opposite meanings, a common mistake for beginners!
