There is no time right now; we will meet later.
Etymology
From Sanskrit समय (samaya), meaning "coming together, agreement, occasion, time," derived from the prefix सम् (sam-, "together, well") + the root इ (i-, "to go"). The core idea was of things converging at a point — hence a moment or appointed time. The word passed unchanged into Hindi and is shared across many South Asian languages.
Cultural note
In Indian culture, समय carries a weight beyond simple clock-time. The phrase "समय बहुत बलवान है" ("Time is very powerful") is a common proverb, reflecting a philosophical tradition — seen in texts from the Mahabharata to everyday conversation — that time is an unstoppable, almost divine force. Note that while समय is the standard Hindi word for "time," learners may also encounter वक़्त (vaqt), a synonym borrowed from Persian/Urdu that is equally common in informal speech, especially in northern cities.
