Show translation
Her dream is to become a doctor.
Etymology
From Sanskrit स्वप्न (svapna), meaning "sleep" or "dream," derived from the root √svap (to sleep). The Sanskrit form is cognate with Latin *somnus* (sleep) and Greek *hypnos* (sleep), all tracing back to Proto-Indo-European *swep- (to sleep). The Hindi form simplified the initial consonant cluster, yielding सपना.
Cultural note
In Indian culture, सपना carries deep emotional weight beyond its literal meaning. Bollywood films and popular music frequently use it as a metaphor for life aspirations — iconic songs like *Sapna Dede* and countless film titles centre on the word. There is also a folk tradition of interpreting night-dreams (सपने देखना) as omens; a "good dream" (अच्छा सपना) seen in the early morning is considered especially auspicious. Note: do not confuse सपना with नींद (nīnd), which refers specifically to *sleep* itself, not the dream.
