Etymology
From Arabic صُبْح (ṣubḥ), meaning "dawn" or "morning," which entered Hindi via Persian during the Mughal period.
Cultural note
Morning holds special significance in Indian culture — it is the prime time for prayer, yoga, and rituals. The greeting "सुप्रभात" (suprabhāt, "good morning") is the formal Sanskrit-derived alternative, while "सुबह" itself is used in everyday speech. Mornings are also associated with auspiciousness (शुभ), making "शुभ सुबह" a common warm wish.
