Hindi Level 1 verb

सुनना

sunnā

/sʊn.naː/

Definition

To hear or to listen to someone or something.

Example

वह ध्यान से संगीत सुनता है।

Show translation

He listens to music carefully.

Etymology

From Sanskrit श्रृणोति (śṛṇoti, "to hear"), via Prakrit *suṇaï, which evolved into the Old Hindi form sunna. The geminate /nn/ in the infinitive is a hallmark of the verbal noun construction common across the Indo-Aryan branch.

Cultural note

In Indian culture, सुनना carries a deeper social weight than simple hearing — elders often say "मेरी बात सुनो" (listen to what I say) to mean "respect and obey my words." The distinction between passively hearing (सुनाई देना) and actively listening (ध्यान से सुनना) is important in everyday Hindi. Be careful not to confuse सुनना (to listen) with सोना (to sleep) — they sound similar to beginners but are entirely different words.
