Italian Level 1 verb

aiutare

/a.juˈta.re/

Definition

To give support or assistance to someone so they can do something more easily.

Example

Posso aiutarti a portare le borse?

Show translation

Can I help you carry the bags?

Etymology

From Latin *adiutāre*, a frequentative form of *adiuvāre* ("to help, assist"), itself from *ad-* ("toward") + *iuvāre* ("to please, benefit"). The same Latin root gives English "aid" and "adjutant."

Cultural note

Italians often use *aiutare* in set phrases like *aiutati che Dio t'aiuta* — a proverb meaning "God helps those who help themselves." Offering help to strangers in Italy is a common social gesture, especially with luggage on trains or directions in the street, and refusing can sometimes come across as cold.
