Etymology

From Latin *clavis* ("key"), from the Proto-Indo-European root *klehโ‚‚w-* ("hook, nail, peg"). The same root gave English "clavicle" (collarbone, shaped like a small key) and is related to "close" via Old French. In musical Italian, *chiave* also means "clef" โ€” the symbol that "unlocks" the pitch of a musical staff.

Cultural note

In Italian, *chiave* extends well beyond a physical key. It appears in countless figurative expressions: *la chiave del successo* (the key to success), *in chiave ironica* (in an ironic key/tone), and *parola chiave* (keyword). When used as an adjective before or after a noun โ€” *un ruolo chiave*, *un punto chiave* โ€” it means "key" in the sense of "crucial," mirroring the English usage. Italian music theory also uses *chiave* for the clef signs (e.g., *chiave di violino*), a reminder of how deeply the word is woven into Italian culture and history.
