Etymology
From Latin *cognōscere* ("to get to know, recognize"), from *co-* (together) + *gnōscere* (to know). In Italian the prefix *co-* was worn down to *co-*, giving *conoscere*. The same Latin root yields English "cognition," "recognize," and "incognito."
Cultural note
Italian makes a firm distinction that English collapses: *conoscere* means to know a person or place (familiarity), while *sapere* means to know a fact or how to do something. Confusing the two is a classic false-step for English speakers — you *conosci* your neighbour but *sai* her phone number. French has the same split: *connaître* vs. *savoir*.
