I open the window every morning to let in fresh air.
Etymology
From Latin *fenestra*, meaning "window" or "opening for light." The Latin root may derive from Etruscan, and is also the ancestor of English "fenestration" (the arrangement of windows in a building). The Italian form underwent a regular shift of initial *f* being preserved, while the medial vowel softened over centuries of spoken use.
Cultural note
Windows hold a special place in Italian daily life and literature. The iconic image of Italians leaning out of their *finestra* to chat with neighbours โ the classic *affacciarsi alla finestra* โ is a staple of Italian culture from Renaissance poetry to modern cinema. Note that in computing, *finestra* is also the standard Italian word for a software "window" on screen, making it doubly useful in modern contexts.
