Italian Level 1 verb

giocare

/dʒoˈkaːre/

Definition

To play — whether a sport, a game, or for fun. Often used with "a" before the activity (e.g., giocare a calcio).

Example

I bambini giocano in giardino ogni pomeriggio.

Show translation

The children play in the garden every afternoon.

Etymology

From Latin *jocare* ("to joke, jest"), derived from *jocus* ("joke, game"). In Late Latin and the Romance languages, *jocare* gradually displaced the classical *ludere* as the everyday verb for playing. The same root gives English "joke" and French *jouer*.

Cultural note

In Italy, *giocare a calcio* (playing football/soccer) is practically a cultural institution — from informal kickabouts in a *cortile* (courtyard) to passionate debates about Serie A. Note the key distinction: Italians use *giocare* for games and sport, but *suonare* when "playing" a musical instrument. Mixing these up is a very common false-step for learners.
