Italian Level 1 noun

libro

/ˈliː.bro/

Definition

A printed or written work with pages bound together; a book.

Example

Ho lasciato il mio libro sul tavolo della cucina.

Show translation

I left my book on the kitchen table.

Etymology

From Latin *liber* ("book, inner bark of a tree"), as early Romans wrote on the thin inner bark (liber) of trees. The same root gives English "library" (via Latin *libraria*) and the name *Liber*, a Roman deity.

Cultural note

Italy has a deep literary tradition — Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio all wrote in Italian. The phrase *un libro di testa* ("a book of the mind") is used informally to describe someone with a lot of knowledge. Bookshops (*librerie*) remain beloved gathering spots in Italian cities, and the word *libreria* is a classic false friend: it means "bookshop" or "bookcase," NOT "library" (which is *biblioteca*).
