Italian Level 1 noun

mattina

/matหˆtiหna/

Definition

The morning; the early part of the day, from sunrise to noon.

Example

Ogni mattina bevo un caffรจ prima di lavorare.

Show translation

Every morning I drink a coffee before working.

Etymology

From Latin *matutina* (sc. *hora*), meaning "the morning hour," derived from *Matuta*, the Roman goddess of the dawn. The word entered Old Italian as *mattina* and has remained stable ever since.

Cultural note

Morning culture is central to Italian daily life. The *mattina* ritual of an espresso โ€” standing at the bar, never sitting โ€” is so ingrained that ordering a *caffellatte* after 11 a.m. is widely considered a social faux pas. Don't confuse *mattina* with *mattino*, its masculine synonym; both are correct and equally common, but *mattina* is slightly more frequent in everyday speech.
