Show translation

Can you take the book from the bag, please?

Etymology

From Latin *prehendere* ("to seize, grasp"), itself from *prae-* ("before") + *hendere* ("to grab"). The Latin root also gives English words like "apprehend" and "comprehend." The form contracted in Vulgar Latin to *prендere*, then *prendere* in Italian.

Cultural note

*Prendere* is one of the most versatile verbs in Italian. Italians use it where English would use several different verbs: *prendere un caffè* (to have a coffee), *prendere l'autobus* (to catch the bus), *prendere freddo* (to catch a cold), and *prendere una decisione* (to make a decision). Mastering its collocations is a huge leap toward sounding naturally Italian.
