Italian Level 2 verb

raccontare

/rak.konˈta.re/

Definition

To tell or narrate a story, event, or experience to someone.

Example

La nonna racconta sempre belle storie ai bambini.

Show translation

Grandma always tells beautiful stories to the children.

Etymology

From Italian *re-* (again, back) + *contare* (to count, to recount), itself from Latin *computāre* (to reckon, calculate). The semantic shift from "counting" to "recounting" a narrative mirrors the same journey in English's own word "recount."

Cultural note

Storytelling is deeply woven into Italian social life — sharing personal stories (*raccontare* una storia) over a long meal is a cherished ritual. The tradition of oral narrative also underpins Italy's rich literary heritage, from Boccaccio's *Decameron* to modern cinema. Note that *raccontare* is a false friend trap for Spanish speakers: the Spanish cognate *recontar* is rare and formal, whereas Italian uses *raccontare* naturally in everyday speech.
