Italian Level 1 noun

sera

/ˈsɛ.ra/

Definition

The evening; the later part of the day after the afternoon and before night.

Example

Ci vediamo questa sera al parco.

Show translation

We'll see each other this evening at the park.

Etymology

From Latin *sera*, feminine of *serus* ("late"). The same root gives Spanish *tarde* (via a different path) and English "sere" (withered, as in late autumn). Italian kept the form almost unchanged from classical Latin.

Cultural note

Evening holds special social weight in Italian culture. *La sera* is prime time for the *passeggiata* — the traditional after-dinner stroll through town — and for lingering meals with family. Common greetings shift at this time: *buonasera* (good evening) replaces *buongiorno* typically from around 5–6 pm. Not to be confused with *notte* (night), which implies darkness and bedtime.
