sorridere
/sorˈriːdere/
Definition
To smile — to make a happy expression by curving your lips upward.
Example
Il bambino sorride ogni volta che vede il cane.
Show translation
The child smiles every time he sees the dog.
Etymology
From Latin *subridēre* ("to smile beneath"), a compound of *sub-* ("under, slightly") + *ridēre* ("to laugh"). The prefix softened full laughter into the gentler act of smiling. *Ridēre* itself is cognate with Sanskrit *vrīḍ-* and ultimately tied to a Proto-Indo-European root for playful movement.
Cultural note
In Italy, smiling at strangers is less automatic than in, say, the United States — a warm smile here typically signals genuine warmth or familiarity rather than polite formality. The phrase *la vita sorride* ("life is smiling at you") is a common way to say that things are going well for someone, almost as if fortune itself has a face.
