From Latin *sperāre* ("to hope, to expect"), derived from *spes* ("hope"). The same Latin root gives English "desperate" (literally "without hope") and Spanish *esperar*, French *espérer*. The Proto-Indo-European root *speh₁-* carried a sense of stretching or thriving toward something.

Italians use *sperare* constantly in daily speech — *speriamo!* ("let's hope so!") is one of the most common conversational fillers. It appears in the famous phrase *Speriamo che sia femmina* (the title of a beloved 1986 comedy film). Note the false-friend trap with Spanish *esperar*, which also means "to wait" — Italian *sperare* means ONLY "to hope," never "to wait" (that's *aspettare*).
