Italian Level 2 verb

spiegare

/spjeˈɡaːre/

Definition

To explain something clearly so that another person can understand it.

Example

Puoi spiegare come funziona questa macchina?

Show translation

Can you explain how this machine works?

Etymology

From Latin *explicāre*, meaning "to unfold" or "to spread out" — formed from *ex-* ("out") + *plicāre* ("to fold"). The idea of literally unfolding something evolved into the figurative sense of making a complex idea clear. The same Latin root gives English "explicit" and "explicate".

Cultural note

Italians value expressive, detailed explanation in conversation — *spiegare* comes up constantly in classrooms, family debates, and even heated gesticulated discussions. A common phrase learners encounter early is *Mi puoi spiegare...?* ("Can you explain to me...?"), which is both polite and natural. Be careful not to confuse *spiegare* with *dispiegare* (to unfurl/deploy, used for flags or troops) — a subtle false friend for those who know Spanish *desplegar*.
