Japanese word of the day

A new word, every day. Free, forever.

Japanese Level 2 verb

覚える

oboeru

Definition

To memorize or learn something; also, to feel or experience a sensation.

Example

毎日単語を覚えると、日本語が上手になる。

If you memorize words every day, your Japanese will improve.

Etymology

From Old Japanese 覚ゆ (oboyu), meaning "to become aware of" or "to feel." The modern transitive form 覚える (oboeru) developed during the Heian period (794–1185) and shifted to encompass both "to memorize" and "to sense/feel," reflecting an ancient connection between memory and bodily sensation in Japanese cognition.

Cultural note

In Japanese education culture, 暗記 (anki — rote memorization) is deeply valued, and 覚える is the everyday verb behind that practice. You'll hear it constantly in schools: 漢字を覚える (memorize kanji), テストのために覚える (study for a test). Note that 覚える also carries the nuance of "to feel" (e.g., 痛みを覚える — to feel pain), which can surprise learners who only know its "memorize" meaning. Don't confuse it with 教える (oshieru), which means "to teach" — a classic false friend for beginners.
