Etymology

도움 is the nominal form of the verb 돕다 (to help), formed by adding the nominalizing suffix -음 to the stem 도우-. 돕다 traces back to Middle Korean 돕다, which carried the same core meaning of aiding or assisting. The pattern of turning a verb into a noun with -음/-ㅁ is highly productive in Korean (e.g., 웃음 from 웃다, 믿음 from 믿다).

Cultural note

In Korean culture, asking for or offering 도움 carries social weight. Directly asking a stranger for help can feel burdensome (폐가 되다), so Koreans often soften requests with phrases like 혹시 괜찮으시면 ("if it's okay with you"). The concept of 품앗이 — a traditional system of mutual labor exchange in farming villages — reflects how deeply communal assistance is rooted in Korean society. The verb form 돕다 is also common; you'll often hear 도와주세요 ("Please help me") as an urgent appeal.
