Korean Level 2 verb

가르치다

gareuchida

/ka.ɾɯ.tɕʰi.da/

Definition

To teach or instruct someone, sharing knowledge or a skill.

Example

선생님이 학생들에게 수학을 가르칩니다.

Show translation

The teacher teaches math to the students.

Etymology

From native Korean roots: 가르- (to divide/separate, as in distinguishing or sorting knowledge) + -치다 (a causative/intensive verbal suffix). The "dividing" sense captures the idea of breaking knowledge down and passing it on — a teacher sorts and parcels out what they know.

Cultural note

In Korean culture, teachers (선생님, seonsaengnim) are held in especially high social regard, influenced by Confucian values that place scholars and educators near the top of the social hierarchy. The word 선생님 literally means "one born before" — implying wisdom from experience. Be careful not to confuse 가르치다 (to teach) with the similar-sounding 가리키다 (to point at/indicate) — a very common mix-up for learners.
