Korean Level 2 verb

걷다

geotda

/kʌt̚.t͈a/

Definition

To walk; to move on foot at a regular pace.

Example

우리는 공원에서 함께 걸었어요.

Show translation

We walked together in the park.

Etymology

Native Korean root. The stem 걷- follows an irregular conjugation pattern called ㄷ-불규칙 (the "ㄷ irregular"), where the final consonant ㄷ changes to ㄹ before vowel-initial endings — so 걷다 → 걸어요, 걸었어요. This class of verbs puzzles even intermediate learners precisely because the stem looks so simple.

Cultural note

Walking culture is prominent in Korea — 산책 (a leisurely stroll) is a beloved pastime, and many Koreans take evening walks along 한강 (the Han River) or in neighborhood parks. Fitness apps that count daily steps (만보기, 萬步器 — "ten-thousand-step counter") are extremely popular, reflecting a widespread health consciousness around walking.
