Korean Level 2 noun

기억

gi-eok

Definition

A memory; something you remember from the past. Can also mean the act of remembering.

Example

그 여행의 기억이 아직도 생생해요.

Show translation

The memory of that trip is still vivid.

Etymology

기억 (記憶) is a Sino-Korean compound: 記 (기, *gi*) means "to record" and 憶 (억, *eok*) means "to recall or think of." Together they paint memory as something both inscribed and retrieved — perfectly mirroring how we understand memory today.

Cultural note

In Korean culture, shared memories (추억, *chu-eok* — a warmer, more nostalgic sibling of 기억) are deeply tied to communal identity. Koreans often distinguish between 기억 (a neutral, factual memory) and 추억 (a cherished, emotional recollection), so don't be surprised when a native speaker reaches for 추억 instead when reminiscing fondly.
