묻다

mutda

/mut̚.t͈a/

Definition

Show translation

If you don't know, be sure to ask the teacher.

Etymology

Native Korean verb. The stem 묻- has been used in Old Korean with the same core meaning of "to ask." It should not be confused with the homonym 묻다 meaning "to bury" or "to get stained," which share the same spelling but differ in meaning and conjugation patterns — a common point of confusion even for intermediate learners.

Cultural note

Korean has a rich system of speech levels, so *how* you ask matters as much as *what* you ask. The polite form 물어보세요 (ask, please) is used when speaking to elders or teachers; the casual form 물어봐 is used with close friends. Notably, asking questions freely in a classroom was historically considered less culturally common in Korea than in Western settings, though this is changing among younger generations.
