Korean Level 2 noun

웃음

useom

/ut͡ɕɯm/

Definition

A smile or laugh; the act or expression of laughing or smiling.

Example

그녀의 웃음이 방 안을 밝게 했다.

Show translation

Her smile brightened the whole room.

Etymology

Derived from the verb 웃다 (utda, "to laugh/smile") + the nominalizing suffix -음, which converts verbs into nouns. The root 웃- is traced back to Middle Korean 웃다, carrying the same core meaning of expressing joy through the face.

Cultural note

In Korean culture, a smile (웃음) carries deep social weight. The phrase "웃음은 최고의 약" ("laughter is the best medicine") is widely used, reflecting a cultural emphasis on maintaining a warm, harmonious atmosphere. Note that Koreans may also smile in awkward or uncomfortable situations as a social buffer — not always a sign of happiness. Don't confuse 웃음 with 울음 (ueum), which means "crying" — they look and sound similar and are a classic false-friend pair for learners!
