여행
yeo·haeng
Definition
A trip or journey to another place, usually for leisure or exploration.
Example
우리는 다음 달에 제주도로 여행을 갑니다.
Show translation
We are going on a trip to Jeju Island next month.
Etymology
Borrowed from Classical Chinese 旅行 (旅 *lǚ* "travel, lodge away from home" + 行 *xíng* "go, walk"). The same compound is shared across East Asian languages — Japanese *ryokō* (旅行), Mandarin *lǚxíng* — reflecting the deep influence of Literary Chinese on Korean vocabulary.
Cultural note
Travel culture is enormously popular in South Korea. Jeju Island (제주도), referenced in today's example, is the country's most iconic domestic destination — often called "Korea's Hawaii." The verb form 여행하다 ("to travel") and the phrase 여행을 가다 ("to go on a trip") are both very common in everyday speech. Note: 여행 is a false friend for Japanese learners — Japanese 旅行 (ryokō) means the same thing, but pronunciation differs significantly.
