Show translation
I like to walk in the park in the morning.
Etymology
From Latin *ambulāre* ("to walk"), via a contracted Vulgar Latin form *ambitāre* or through the early Old Portuguese form *andar*. The same Latin root gave English "amble" and "ambulance."
Cultural note
In Brazilian Portuguese, *andar* is wonderfully flexible. Beyond walking, Brazilians use it as a status verb — "Como você está andando?" literally means "How are you going?" but functions as "How have you been?" It also means a floor or storey of a building (o segundo andar = the second floor), so the same word that gets you walking can also tell you which level of a building you're on.
