Show translation
She wants to learn English to work abroad.
Etymology
From Latin *apprehendere* ("to seize, grasp, take hold of"), composed of *ad-* ("toward") + *prehendere* ("to grasp"). The metaphor of learning as "grasping" an idea is ancient — the same root gives English *apprehend* and *comprehend*. In Vulgar Latin the meaning shifted from physical grasping to mental acquisition, yielding Old Portuguese *aprender* and its modern form.
Cultural note
Brazil places enormous cultural value on education as a path to social mobility (*ascensão social*). The phrase *"nunca é tarde para aprender"* ("it's never too late to learn") is a beloved proverb heard across all generations. Note that *aprender* is distinct from *ensinar* ("to teach") — a common mix-up for English speakers, since "learn" and "teach" are sometimes confused in casual Brazilian speech too (e.g., "me aprende isso!" meaning "teach me that!").
