Make the most of every moment with the people you love.

Etymology

From Old Portuguese *aproveitar*, derived from the prefix *a-* (Latin *ad-*, "toward") + *proveitar*, itself from *proveito* ("benefit, profit"), which comes from Latin *profectus* ("progress, advance"), the past participle of *proficere* ("to make progress, to profit"). The word has been in common use since at least the 14th century.

Cultural note

*Aproveitar* is a culturally loaded word in Portuguese-speaking societies. Brazilians and Portuguese alike use it as a warm send-off — *Aproveite!* — meaning "enjoy it!" or "make the most of it!", said when someone is going on holiday, sitting down to a meal, or heading out for the night. It reflects a broadly shared cultural value of savoring life's good moments rather than letting them pass unused. Be aware that in some contexts *aproveitar-se de alguém* (to take advantage of someone) carries a negative connotation, so context matters.
