Portuguese (Brazilian) Level 1 adjective

bom

/bõ/

Definition

Good; having a quality or characteristic that is desirable or satisfying.

Example

Esse café está muito bom hoje de manhã.

Show translation

This coffee is really good this morning.

Etymology

From Latin *bonus* ("good, virtuous, fortunate"), from Proto-Italic *dw-ono-, related to *duenos* ("good"). The Latin root also gave English "bonus," "boon," and "bounty."

Cultural note

In Brazilian Portuguese, *bom* is used in countless everyday expressions. "Bom dia!" (Good morning!), "Bom apetite!" (Enjoy your meal!), and "Tá bom!" (Okay! / Alright!) are heard constantly. Note that *bom* is the masculine form; the feminine equivalent is *boa* — so you'd say *um bom livro* (a good book, masc.) but *uma boa ideia* (a good idea, fem.). "Boa!" on its own is also a popular Brazilian exclamation meaning "Nice one!" or "Great!"
