confiança

/kõˈfjɐ̃.sɐ/

A strong feeling that you can trust or rely on someone or something. It also means belief in your own abilities.

Show translation

She has a lot of confidence in her work.

Etymology

From the verb *confiar* ("to trust, to confide"), which derives from Latin *confidere* — a compound of *con-* (intensive prefix, "together/fully") and *fidere* ("to trust"), rooted in *fides* ("faith, trust"). The same Latin root gives English "confidence," "fidelity," and "fiancé."

Cultural note

In Brazilian and European Portuguese culture, *confiança* carries extra social weight: relationships — personal and professional — are often described as working because há confiança ("there is trust"). The phrase *pessoa de confiança* (a person of trust) is a high compliment, meaning someone reliable enough to be entrusted with important matters. Watch out for the false friend trap: English "confidence" can mean boldness or self-assurance, but *confiança* leans more toward trust in others than personal boldness (for that, Brazilians often say *autoconfiança* or *segurança*).
