Portuguese (Brazilian) Level 2 verb

conseguir

/kõ.seˈɡiɾ/

Definition

To manage to do something; to succeed in achieving a goal or obtaining something.

Example

Ela conseguiu terminar o trabalho a tempo.

Show translation

She managed to finish the work on time.

Etymology

From Latin *consequi* ("to follow after, to obtain"), formed from *con-* (intensive prefix, "together/fully") + *sequi* ("to follow"). The same root gives English *consequence* and *subsequent*. In Portuguese, the verb narrowed to its modern sense of achieving or managing to do something.

Cultural note

In Brazilian Portuguese, *conseguir* + infinitive is the everyday way to express "to be able to (and actually do it)" — slightly stronger than *poder*, which expresses mere capability. Saying *Eu não consigo* ("I can't manage it / I just can't") carries an emotional weight of genuine struggle, and you'll hear it constantly in daily life, from students to athletes to telenovela characters. It is also widely used to mean "to obtain" something: *Consegui ingressos para o show* (I got tickets to the show).
