Show translation

We had a long conversation about our plans.

Etymology

From Latin *conversātio*, from *conversārī* ("to associate with, turn around with"), itself from *con-* ("together") + *versāre* ("to turn"). The word passed into Old Portuguese as *conversa* and has retained its core meaning across centuries.

Cultural note

In Brazilian and European Portuguese culture alike, *conversa* is central to social life — long, unhurried conversations over coffee or at the table (*à mesa*) are deeply valued. In informal Brazilian Portuguese, the phrase *papo* is a common slang synonym, while *bate-papo* ("chat") often refers to casual or online conversation. Be careful not to confuse *conversa* with *conferência* (a formal lecture or conference).
