Portuguese Level 2 adjective

livre

/ˈli.vɾɨ/

Definition

Not controlled or limited by anyone or anything; able to act or move as you wish.

Example

Nos fins de semana, ele se sente completamente livre.

Show translation

On weekends, he feels completely free.

Etymology

From Latin *liber* ("free, unrestricted"), the root of a broad family of words across Romance languages. The same Latin root gives English "liberty" and "liberate," making *livre* one of the easiest Portuguese adjectives for English speakers to connect to a familiar concept.

Cultural note

In Brazil and Portugal alike, *livre* carries strong emotional weight beyond mere freedom of movement — it echoes in slogans, poetry, and music (notably in bossa nova and MPB lyrics). Be careful not to confuse *livre* (free as in freedom) with *grátis* or *gratuito* (free as in no cost): "entrada livre" means free admission, but context usually clarifies which sense is meant.
