Show translation

She felt great pride watching her son graduate.

Etymology

From Old Portuguese *orgulho*, borrowed from Old French *orgueil* ("pride, arrogance"), itself from Frankish *urgōlī* ("pride"). The word entered Iberian Romance during the medieval period through the cultural influence of the French troubadour tradition, originally carrying a stronger connotation of haughtiness before softening into its modern, largely positive sense.

Cultural note

In Portuguese culture, *orgulho* can express both justified, warm pride (e.g., a parent's pride in a child) and arrogance — context and tone are key. The phrase *tenho muito orgulho em ti* ("I'm so proud of you") is a common, heartfelt expression in both European and Brazilian Portuguese. Note that *orgulho* is also the word used for "Pride" in the context of LGBTQ+ Pride events (*Marcha do Orgulho*), mirroring English usage.
