Show translation
She has the dream of traveling the whole world.
Etymology
From Latin *somnium* ("dream"), derived from *somnus* ("sleep"), which is cognate with Greek *hypnos* and English *somnolent*. The Latin *-mn-* cluster simplified over time in Vulgar Latin, eventually yielding the Portuguese form *sonho* via the intermediate *sogno*-like stage common in Ibero-Romance.
Cultural note
In Brazilian and European Portuguese culture, *sonho* carries deep emotional weight beyond its literal meaning. It frequently appears in popular music (*música popular brasileira*) and poetry as a symbol of longing and possibility — closely related in spirit to *saudade*. In Brazil, *sonho* is also the colloquial name for a jam-filled doughnut, a beloved bakery staple, so context matters! Saying *você é um sonho* ("you are a dream") is a warm, affectionate compliment.
