Show translation

Her smile lit up the whole room.

Etymology

From the verb *sorrir* ("to smile"), itself from Latin *subridēre* — *sub-* ("slightly, from below") + *ridēre* ("to laugh"). The noun suffix *-iso* turns the verb into a concrete result: the act or expression of smiling. The same Latin root gives English "ridicule" and "risible."

Cultural note

Brazilians are widely regarded as warm and expressive communicators, and the *sorriso* is a key social signal — in shops, on the street, and in professional settings alike. Unlike in some cultures where smiling at strangers can seem unusual, in Brazil it is a natural, friendly greeting. The word also appears in countless song lyrics and popular sayings, such as *"Um sorriso não custa nada"* ("A smile costs nothing").
