Portuguese Level 2 noun

vizinho

/viˈziɲu/

Definition

A person who lives next to or very near you. Can also be used as an adjective meaning "neighboring."

Example

O vizinho me ajudou a carregar as compras.

Show translation

The neighbor helped me carry the groceries.

Etymology

From Latin *vicinus*, meaning "one who lives in the same district," derived from *vicus* ("village, street, neighborhood"). The same root gives Spanish *vecino*, Italian *vicino*, and the English word "vicinity."

Cultural note

In Portuguese-speaking cultures, the relationship with neighbors (*vizinhos*) is traditionally close and warm — especially in older neighborhoods and rural areas, where dropping in on a neighbor without calling ahead is perfectly normal. In Brazil, a nosy or overly involved neighbor is sometimes called *vizinho bisbilhoteiro* (a snoopy neighbor), a figure common in Brazilian soap operas. In Portugal, the concept of a tight-knit *bairro* (neighborhood) makes *vizinho* a word with real communal weight.
