From Old East Slavic *помьнѣти, derived from Proto-Slavic *mьněti ("to think, consider"), which shares roots with Latin *mens* ("mind") and English *mind*. The prefix *по-* here adds a sense of sustained or completed mental action.

Memory and remembrance carry deep cultural weight in Russia.
