Russian word of the day

A new word, every day. Free, forever.

Russian Level 2 verb

помнить

/ˈpom.nʲɪtʲ/

Definition

To remember or to keep something in one's memory.

Example

Я хорошо помню этот летний день.

I remember that summer day very well.

Etymology

From Old East Slavic *помьнѣти, derived from Proto-Slavic *mьněti ("to think, consider"), which shares roots with Latin *mens* ("mind") and English *mind*. The prefix *по-* here adds a sense of sustained or completed mental action.

Cultural note

Memory and remembrance carry deep cultural weight in Russia. The verb *помнить* appears prominently in the solemn phrase «Никто не забыт, ничто не забыто» ("No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten"), a WWII commemoration motto. The related noun *память* (memory) lends its name to Immortal Regiment marches held on 9 May. For English speakers: *помнить* describes an ongoing state of remembering, whereas *вспомнить* (perfective) means to suddenly recall something — a crucial distinction beginners often miss.
