帮助

bāngzhù

Definition

To help or assist someone; also used as a noun meaning "help" or "assistance."

Example

你能帮助我找到这个地方吗?

Show translation

Can you help me find this place?

Etymology

帮 (bāng) originally referred to a group or gang of people working together — a cooperative crew. 助 (zhù) means "to assist" and appears in many compound words related to support (助手 zhùshǒu, "assistant"). Together, 帮助 conveys the idea of a united effort to aid someone.

Cultural note

In Chinese culture, accepting and offering 帮助 is deeply tied to the concept of 人情 (rénqíng) — social reciprocity and human feeling. Helping someone creates an unspoken bond of mutual obligation. Notably, 帮 alone (as a verb) is very common in casual speech ("帮我一下"), while 帮助 sounds slightly more complete and is standard in writing or formal contexts.
