Mandarin Chinese Level 2 adjective / adverb

gòu

/ko˨˩˦/

Definition

Enough; sufficient. Used to say that there is as much of something as needed.

Example

这些米饭够吃了。

Show translation

There is enough rice to eat.

Etymology

够 is composed of 夕 (evening/night radical) over 口 (mouth) with a phonetic component. In classical Chinese, the character conveyed the idea of reaching or stretching to meet a need — hence "sufficient, enough." The modern simplified form 够 appears frequently across all registers of Mandarin.

Cultural note

够 is extremely versatile in spoken Mandarin. It can stand alone as a one-word reply (够了!— "That's enough!") and is often reduplicated for emphasis or used in the pattern 够+adjective (e.g., 够大 "big enough", 够热 "hot enough"). Be aware that in some contexts it carries mild exasperation: 够了!can mean "Enough of this!" as well as simply "That will do."
