Mandarin Chinese Level 2 verb / noun

huà

/xua˨˩˦/

Definition

To draw or paint something; also a noun meaning a picture or painting.

Example

她喜欢画花和树。

Show translation

She likes to draw flowers and trees.

Etymology

From Old Chinese *ɡʷreːɡs, meaning to draw or delineate. The traditional character 畫 depicts a hand holding a brush, tracing a boundary — the semantic core is the act of marking out a shape. The simplified form 画 retains the essential strokes of the original.

Cultural note

Chinese painting (中国画, Zhōngguóhuà) is one of the world's oldest continuous artistic traditions, dating back over 5,000 years. Unlike Western oil painting, it traditionally uses ink and watercolour on silk or paper, with calligraphy and poetry often integrated into the composition. The word 画 covers both the act (to draw/paint) and the product (a picture), so context tells you which is meant — much like English "paint."
