Originally a pictograph of a flowering plant. The character 花 emerged as a simplified variant of 華 (huá, "splendor, glory"), which itself depicted a flowering tree. Over time, 花 became the standard form for "flower," while 华/華 retained the meaning of "magnificent" and became a poetic word for China itself (中华, Zhōnghuá). The verb sense "to spend" developed metaphorically — money and time "blossom away" like petals falling.

Flowers carry deep symbolic weight in Chinese culture: the plum blossom (梅花 méihuā) represents resilience in winter, and the peony (牡丹 mǔdan) is the unofficial national flower, symbolising prosperity and honor. 花 also appears in countless idioms — 花心 (huāxīn, "flower heart") means fickle or flirtatious. Watch out for the verb usage: English speakers often forget that 花 covers both money AND time (花时间, huā shíjiān = "to spend time"), unlike English which uses two different verbs.
