Mandarin Chinese Level 2 verb

jiè

/tɕiɛ˨˩˦/

Definition

To borrow something from someone, or to lend something to someone.

Example

你可以借我一支笔吗?

Show translation

Can you lend me a pen?

Etymology

The character 借 combines the semantic component 人 (rén, "person") on the left with the phonetic component 昔 (xī, "the past; former times") on the right. The original sense was "to rely on another person temporarily," which evolved into the dual meaning of borrowing and lending — both describing the same transaction from different perspectives.

Cultural note

In Chinese, 借 covers both "borrow" AND "lend" depending on context — the direction is made clear by the sentence structure. 借给 (jiè gěi) means "lend to," while 借 alone or 借来 (jiè lái) typically means "borrow." This flexibility can trip up English speakers who expect two separate words. Also note: asking to 借 something carries an implicit social understanding that it will be returned — it is quite different from asking for a gift (要, yào).
