Mandarin Chinese Level 3 verb / noun

决定

juédìng

/tɕy̞˧˥.tìŋ˥˩/

Definition

To decide or make a choice; also used as a noun meaning a decision.

Example

我们决定明天一起去爬山。

Show translation

We decided to go hiking together tomorrow.

Etymology

决 (jué) originally depicted water breaking through a dam — the sense of a definitive "break" or resolution. 定 (dìng) means "to settle" or "to fix in place," depicted as a roof over a correct/upright form. Together, 决定 conveys the idea of reaching a firm, settled resolution — breaking through uncertainty to a fixed point.

Cultural note

In Chinese social contexts, decisions are often framed as collective rather than individual. Saying 我们决定… ("we decided…") is far more common than 我决定… ("I decided…") even when one person made the call — this reflects the cultural value placed on group consensus and face-saving. In formal or business settings, 做出决定 (zuòchū juédìng, "to make a decision") is a more polished phrasing.
