Mandarin Chinese Level 2 verb

开始

kāi shǐ

/kʰai˥˥.ʂʅ˥˩/

Definition

To begin or start doing something.

Example

我们明天开始上课。

Show translation

We start class tomorrow.

Etymology

A compound of 开 (kāi, "to open") + 始 (shǐ, "beginning"). The image is of "opening up a beginning" — the same 开 that appears in 开门 (to open a door) and 开心 (to feel open-hearted/happy). 始 traces back to Old Chinese roots meaning "the first moment," appearing in classical texts like the 道德经.

Cultural note

In Chinese culture, beginnings carry great weight — auspicious dates, lucky numbers, and rituals mark the start of new ventures. The phrase 万事开头难 (wàn shì kāi tóu nán), "every venture is hard at the start," is a widely used proverb that acknowledges the difficulty of beginnings while encouraging perseverance.
