Mandarin Chinese Level 1 adjective

máng

Definition

Busy; occupied with work or activities and having little free time.

Example

我今天很忙,没有时间休息。

Show translation

I am very busy today and have no time to rest.

Etymology

The character 忙 combines the semantic radical 忄(heart/mind) with the phonetic component 亡 (wáng, "to lose/perish"). The idea is that when one is busy, the mind or heart is scattered — as if "lost." This heart radical connection is common in Chinese characters describing mental or emotional states.

Cultural note

In Chinese culture, saying 我很忙 (I'm very busy) is sometimes used socially as a polite deflection, but being busy also carries a positive connotation — it implies productivity and usefulness. A common greeting in Chinese is 你吃了吗? ("Have you eaten?"), but among urban professionals 你忙吗? ("Are you busy?") has become equally common as small talk. Be careful not to confuse 忙 (máng, busy) with 盲 (máng, blind) — they sound identical but are very different characters.
